Commissioners opt for tin roof on Juvenile Service Building, continue courthouse remodel while awaiting state approval

Randy Henrie, building maintenance supervisor, told the Franklin County Commission on May 27 that the Juvenile Service Building needs a new roof and that two options were available: asphalt shingles estimated at $22,000 or tin at $4,000. Commissioners agreed to install tin, asked Henrie to have the building painted to match the District Health Building, and requested he research a suitable replacement tree for recently removed pines.
Henrie also reported progress on the courthouse remodel: delivery of a steel building at the fairgrounds is scheduled for June; framing of an entrance is underway and power has been installed. Commissioners noted that the remodel remains on hold for approval of the fire suppression system by the State.
"The bullet proof window is installed at the Juvenile Service Building and the divider will be in today," Henrie said. He presented the roofing cost estimates and the commission agreed on the lower‑cost tin alternative.
The decision to select tin reflects an immediate cost‑saving choice; commissioners directed staff to complete known site work prior to arrival of the steel structure and to solicit additional bids for other building additions (the salt‑shed lean addition was discussed separately). Implementation steps include painting to match the District Health Building and follow up on procurement for the projected June steel delivery.
