The Horicon Historic Preservation Commission met Jan. 2, 2025, to discuss a proposed historical preservation sign for My Best Friend’s Trail in River Bend Park. Chairperson Bryce Remy called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and noted no members were absent and that there were no public appearances.
Commissioners outlined people and local history items that they said should be featured on the sign, including Roman Bentz, Satterlee Clark Jr., Adrian Karsten, Esther Doughty Luckhardt and Fran Ulmer. Commissioners also identified local landmarks and natural-history topics for further research and possible inclusion: the effigy mounds in Horicon, the Niagara Escapement, the Van Brunt family, an underground brewery on South Hubbard, and the area’s natural ecology.
The commission set its next meeting for Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall to continue work on the sign project. Commission member Knop moved to adjourn; Commission member Neu seconded the motion. All members voted aye and the meeting adjourned at 7:12 p.m.
The discussion produced a list of people and topics for staff or commissioners to investigate further; no formal approval of a sign design or funding was recorded during the session.
