Hobart invites Oneida Nation to discuss proposed trail on former railroad bed

The Village of Hobart Board of Trustees voted April 21, 2026, to extend a formal invitation to the Oneida Nation to meet with village representatives to discuss a proposed pedestrian trail on the former railroad bed from Oneida to Pamperin Park.
The Parks and Recreation Commission recommended seeking public comment to gauge interest and urged village and Oneida Nation representatives to meet face-to-face to reach a mutually beneficial agreement. The board approved an invitation for the Oneida Nation to meet with Village President Richard Heidel; Village Administrator Aaron Kramer; and Village Counsel Frank Kowalkowski and asked that the invitation propose five possible meeting dates.
The minutes state the invitation should allow the Oneida Nation to select the meeting location. The board’s action is procedural: it authorizes outreach and public-comment solicitation; the minutes do not record any agreement with the Oneida Nation or commitments for trail construction.
