Library director reports surge in Halloween attendance, outlines winter programs and staffing plan

UCPL Director Morgan Olson told the board on Sept. 25 that the Halloween on Nolichucky event this year attracted over 1,000 visitors—substantially more than last year—and suggested the library budget for additional candy or supplies for future annual events.
“The Halloween on Nolichucky event had over 1,000 visitors this year, much larger than last year,” Olson reported, noting that RISE Erwin donated candy for the event but the library may need to allocate more funds to support similar turnout in future years.
Olson also said regular programs are maintaining or growing attendance: three story times, teen programs, homeschool programs, and an adult special-needs story time. Upcoming events announced included a Holiday Baking Class on Dec. 2 at Mountain Harvest Kitchen, a Gingerbread Decorating Contest on Dec. 6 (seeking sponsors for candy and supplies), a gift-wrapping station Dec. 8–Dec. 20 (requests for donated wrapping materials), and a Holiday Movie Marathon and Pajama Day on Dec. 23. Olson said regular programs will be suspended the week of Christmas to accommodate reduced staff and predictably low attendance.
On staffing, Olson noted that one staff member will go on maternity leave after Christmas; the library is not planning a new hire at this time and will cover shifts internally.
The board took no formal votes on programming items during the report; these items were recorded for planning and budgetary consideration.
