Pam Hogan of the Sustainable Madison Advisory Committee told the Borough Council the Sustainable Jersey health-action checklist and an associated task force will formalize recommendations to assess and integrate health factors into municipal policy and approvals.
“The purpose of the Sustainable Jersey Health Action Plan is to examine factors in our town policy making and procedures that impact the quality of life and health of Madison residents,” Hogan said, thanking council members for passing the resolution that acknowledged the task force.
Hogan highlighted three examples the task force will address: the health impact of gas leaf blowers (noise and particulate exposure), the effects of artificial lighting on humans and wildlife (including concerns about warm-toned LEDs) and long-term preservation of open space and protection of the borough’s aquifer. She said the planning board and environmental commission are engaged on lighting policy and outreach.
Council indicated support for the work; Hogan said the checklist is not onerous and that the effort will improve collaboration among the Sustainable Madison Advisory Committee, the Board of Health and borough staff.
The council agreed to support the resolution (Resolution 207) and to continue reviewing the recommendations when task-force findings are presented to the body.
