Silver Creek Township’s Board of Supervisors on Oct. 1 approved up to $15,000 for tree trimming, agreed to purchase laptops for supervisors and failed to move forward with a proposed Baker Avenue culvert-lowering project after members expressed liability concerns.
Chairman Mike Helman moved to authorize tree trimming by Carr’s Tree Service for up to $15,000; Vice Chairman Brandon Geyen seconded and the motion carried 4-0. The tree work was presented with an initial estimate of $12,000.
During the maintenance discussion, the board considered a proposed lowering of a culvert on Baker Avenue intended to alter water flow. Vice Chairman Geyen raised concerns about potential liability from altering drainage. Supervisor Ryan Nelson moved to complete the Baker Avenue project as needed and to consult the township attorney about liability; Helman seconded. That motion resulted in a 2-2 split and did not carry.
The board also tabled replacement of tires on the township Chevrolet 1500 while members consider replacing the vehicle. Members discussed a hydraulic study budgeted for 2025; the board directed staff to gather estimates for the study, which officials said should remain valid for five years once completed.
In Old Business the board debated supervisor equipment and approved laptops instead of Chromebooks. Vice Chairman Geyen moved to approve laptops with Helman seconding; Supervisor Andy Christensen abstained due to a conflict of interest and the motion carried 2-1.
Clerk-Treasurer Alana Paumen reported audit materials have been entered into the caseware portal and that CPA field work is scheduled Nov. 12–15. She also said proposed levy certification forms were submitted showing a 3% increase for both township funds, and that election judges and equipment testing are being arranged.
The board announced schedule changes for upcoming meetings, including moving the Nov. 5 meeting to Nov. 7, setting the reorganizational meeting for Dec. 17 and the Board of Audit for Feb. 11. Vice Chairman Geyen moved to adjourn; Supervisor Ryan Nelson seconded and the meeting ended.
