The Steamboat Rock City Council moved through routine business on May 18 while accepting a resignation and setting several items for follow-up.
Kevin Pieters moved and Cory Schurman seconded a motion to accept Marvin Veld's resignation effective April 13, 2026; the motion carried. The council then initiated steps to fill the vacancy.
The council approved the meeting agenda, previous meeting minutes, bills presented for payment and reported hours; motions for each item were made, seconded and recorded as carried. The bills lists included a total of $25,179.26 and an additional ACH/utility list totaling $4,062.54; payroll for May totaled $6,677.25.
Other business: Council agreed to move forward with grant paperwork for a ball-diamond development after receiving materials from Deb Crosser, who offered to help complete the application. The council discussed distressed properties and directed the city clerk to issue letters to some residents and warned that fines could follow if owners did not comply. Members also discussed renting school rooms for storage pending further research and agreed property owners are responsible for tree removal after a request from Renee Montgomery. The council directed JJ Veld to address a water curb-stop repair.
What happens next: The council left several items for staff follow-up and asked for additional information on potential rentals and grant application steps. The next council meeting is scheduled for June 8, 2026.
