School committee approves a slate of service contracts and renewals; members ask procurement questions

The Pawtucket School Committee on June 23 approved a group of facilities and services contracts recommended by district staff and the facilities committee.
Facilities presented the results of several RFPs and recommended awards: a two‑year pest control contract (Mountain Pest, incumbent), a two‑year custodial and maintenance uniform supplier (Spirit Recognition, a Pawtucket company), a two‑year district sanding services contract (Oak Hill Farms), and elevator and chairlift inspection/service agreements (Atlantic Elevator). Staff explained that many RFPs returned only incumbent responses and that the district reduced multi‑year terms to two years in response to market uncertainty; committee members asked whether advertising and vendor outreach should be broadened beyond traditional publications.
Separately, administration recommended a limited quarter‑1 agreement with Mass Insight to continue school improvement and Slater redesign support through September (grant funded), and presented a five‑year transportation contract recommendation to 1st Student after negotiation to reduce the first‑year increase. Committee members praised the negotiation that reduced the initial cost increase but also questioned five‑year terms and asked for legal and RIDE confirmation.
The committee also approved the one‑year food service management renewal with Aramark for 2026–27 (CEP district; no general‑fund cost). Members raised meal quality concerns; an Aramark representative described menu revisions, grant funds and new programming and offered to return with regular updates to the committee.
