Morgan County moves to ban engine compression brakes and reduce speed on stretch of County Road Q

The Morgan County Board of County Commissioners on Aug. 5 approved a first reading of an ordinance to prohibit engine compression brakes on a portion of County Road Q and adopted Resolution 2025 BCC 29 to lower the speed limit on the same stretch from 55 miles per hour to 45 miles per hour.
County Attorney Kathryn Sellers told the board the ordinance would prohibit compression braking on County Road Q between County Roads 17/18 and County Road 18.5; signage will be posted and an exemption will exist for emergencies. The change was requested by the City of Fort Morgan in response to new subdivision development in the area.
The board also adopted Resolution 2025 BCC 29, which the resolution text says will decrease the speed limit on that portion of County Road Q from 55 mph to 45 mph, with the new limit taking effect upon the posting of signs. The resolution sets an additional trigger for a future reduction to 35 mph: the county will consider a further reduction when either 30 residences in the Bijou Subdivision Filing No. 1 are constructed and habitable or when all residences on lots along County Road Q in the development are constructed and habitable.
Chairman Jon J. Becker and Commissioners Timothy A. Malone and Kelvin S. Bernhardt voted 3–0 on both the ordinance first-reading approval and the resolution.
What happens next: the ordinance was advanced as a first reading; further readings or enactment steps remain required before a permanent ban on compression brakes is final. The resolution’s lower speed limit goes into effect after the county posts the required signs, and county staff will handle the sign placement and posting timetable.
