Louisa County to close county driver’s license service May 30 after DOT denies modified option

The Louisa County Board of Supervisors decided at its April 8, 2025 meeting that the driver’s license service operated out of the county treasurer’s office will close on May 30, 2025 after the Iowa Department of Transportation told county officials it could not permit a modified version of that service.
Treasurer Vicki Frank raised the issue to the board and said she had spoken with other county treasurers about the potential for driver’s license office closures in other counties. Chair Shawn Maine told the board he had contacted the Iowa DOT to ask whether a modified local service could be offered; the DOT responded that was not possible, according to the minutes.
Adam Shutt, the county engineer, told the board that state limits on property tax growth could require cuts to county services, noting fiscal pressure on local operations. The minutes record that no motion was made to overturn the decision, and the county’s driver’s license office will close on May 30, 2025.
The board did not record a follow-up plan in the minutes for alternate licensing locations or transition assistance for residents. The meeting adjourned at 9:10 a.m.
