Board approves gray-and-blue interior and blue-and-gold exterior for new middle school; Old Main public sale set for Saturday

Assistant Superintendent Jacob Smith and Taggart Architects presented two interior and two exterior options for the district's new middle school and asked the board to confirm the administration's recommendations so contractors can begin ordering materials.
Jacob Smith said the group refined color, flooring and louver choices after earlier feedback and recommended the board approve interior option 2 (a gray "wildcat" floor with blue inlay) and exterior option 2 (primarily blue and gold louvers). James Meyer of Taggart Architects explained the louvers act as a sunshade and that the manufacturer's powder-coat finish carries a 20-year warranty.
"The louvers are still of the multicolor, and we thought we'd have that as an option to show you...option 2 is just blue and gold," Meyer said. He told the board that the chosen materials will reduce glare, improve durability and allow the project team to balance color variation where appropriate.
Board members asked practical questions about maintenance, flooring lifespan and installation methods for the decorative wildcat inlays. The architects said the predominant interior floor will be a heavy-duty rubber product meant to withstand school wear, and that some decorative elements may be laser-cut or installed from preformed tile sections.
The board accepted the administration's recommendations and authorized Taggart Architects to proceed with procurement and ordering.
Construction updates and Old Main sale
District staff said Old Main will host a public sale of loose, non-fixed contents on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. The administration warned the public that the building currently has no air conditioning, no running water and that elevators and chair lifts are turned off for safety. Items that are part of the building's fixed infrastructure (e.g., built-in clocks, fixed HVAC) will not be sold because of safety concerns and the need to avoid disturbing asbestos during abatement.
Staff said they will post public-facing notices, run a live construction camera on the district website and survey existing commemorative bricks to provide options for repurposing or display once construction is complete.
