The Winneshiek County security committee reported recommendations from a security audit that called for additional exterior lighting for the courthouse parking lot and east facade to improve after-hours safety and polling-station visibility.
Committee members described options including duplicating the lamp at the southwest corner, installing directional lighting on the old jail, or placing fixtures on the courthouse with downward-directed LEDs to avoid neighborhood glare. Staff recommended obtaining at least two contractor bids, evaluating LED replacements for halogen bulbs and ensuring fixtures meet an agreed-upon aesthetic and downcast standard.
Separately, board members discussed moving the county attorney’s office to the Community Services Building as a way to improve security and create better workspace. Supervisors requested a staff walk-through and assessment of partitioning, ceiling work, sprinkler riser placement, IT wiring and costs before committing; staff said a mid-five-figure modification could be possible for modest work while a larger remodel would cost more. The board agreed to a site visit and directed staff to develop a floor plan and discuss timelines and tenant coordination with Spectrum, the building’s current occupant.
Next steps: staff will obtain contractor bids or estimates for lighting, pursue preferred downlighting options, and conduct a site visit and preliminary floor plan for the county-attorney relocation, then report back to the board.
