At its regular meeting, the Dowagiac Union School District Board of Education heard reports from student representatives and school principals recognizing November’s students of the month across the district and sharing upcoming events.
Kelly Millen, principal at Dowagiac Union High School, introduced sophomore Mia Freeman, noting a 4.0 GPA, varsity soccer participation and an academic award. Mia’s English teacher, Karen Speke, said Mia “actively seeks out challenges” and praised her leadership and work ethic.
Middle and elementary principals presented additional recognitions: Dr. Whiteman introduced Symone Bacon as the middle school student of the month; Brian Henry introduced 3rd grader Ritilla Bennett at Justice Gage Elementary; Alicia Stoutman presented Finley Cooper at Sister Lakes Elementary and noted a 25-point gain on a recent math assessment that moved the student into an accelerated group; Nicole Conlon presented Paige Jumplesen as Patrick Hamilton Elementary’s honoree; Dr. Michael Dutton introduced Ryker Phillips for Kinslow Elementary.
Student representatives also reviewed exam schedules for Dec. 18–20, spirit week dress themes, and extracurricular highlights including winter concerts and recent athletic showcases. The superintendent, Greg Bloomer, informed the board that Lighthouse Church has organized a celebration of life for elementary art teacher Gloria White; the district said staff had limited contact with the teacher’s family and the church is arranging the event for the school community.
Board members thanked the students, families and staff; the meeting recessed briefly for photos and later adjourned.
