The Milford Board of Aldermen approved an ordinance on July 6 that adjusts compensation for 16 non‑represented employees, mirroring increases negotiated earlier for the MEA bargaining unit. The measure passed on roll call, 11 yes to 4 no.
Human Resources Director (Miss Barnes) explained the adjustment follows historically consistent practice: when the city approves collective bargaining agreements for represented units, non‑represented staff receive equivalent increases by ordinance. The 16 positions are primarily policing stenographers, clerical roles and a few human‑services positions.
Alderman Smith Jr. and others argued the timing was poor because property tax bills recently went out; he said approving raises right after residents received tax increases is inappropriate. Alderman Fowler also voted no citing the tax impact and her earlier vote against the budget. Supporters said the raises were already accounted for in the approved budget, were necessary to retain staff and to avoid a brain drain as many workers approach retirement.
Human Resources estimated the fiscal impact at about $211,000 for the prior years cited and roughly $242,000 over the life of the contract; the board majority voted to approve the ordinance.
