Michael Brown, parks director, told the Natrona County Parks advisory board on Feb. 13 that the Casper Mountain Trail Center is open and operational and that recent events drew heavy use.
Brown said high-school and middle-school races were held the previous weekend and that after one middle-school race there remained about 110 vehicles in the parking lot. He also said a biathlon group had begun grooming and that staff groomed a reported 13-kilometer course last Sunday. "Everything went pretty well," Brown said.
On facilities, Brown said the lodge is open, the lobby hours are set and the banquet hall will be open Wednesday through Sunday with staff available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. He said the fire-alarm system is mostly installed and contractors would finish panel work; the fire marshal will set a maximum occupancy, and Brown estimated "at a minimum, I believe that's gonna be 200" people.
Brown warned of a recurring maintenance problem: "We came in and we had a faucet that was running all night," he said, noting that unattended running faucets can drain the well and overload the septic system and that repeated incidents could force changes to building access.
On rentals and revenue, Brown said the department has weekday and weekend fees, plus discounted rates for nonprofits and government entities. Interest has come from Game and Fish and the Central Wyoming Trail Alliance; some weddings are being scheduled for summer. Rental revenue will be deposited to the county general fund, and the county commissioners will approve specific budget allocations for expenditures.
Brown also described furnishing and equipment status: banquet tables were ordered and expected within a week; planned replacement chairs were reprioritized to cover kitchen sinks and counters that were cut from the original contract. He said staff will verify existing appliances (freezer and refrigerator) before full cleanup and that he will consult the health department on whether a commercial microwave will be required in the warming kitchen.
