Surf City council issues safety proclamations, honors local businesses and updates residents on dredging and preparedness

The Surf City Town Council used part of its May meeting to adopt multiple proclamations and to recognize local contributions before hearing staff reports on infrastructure and preparedness.
Mayor Teresa B. Batts read proclamations designating Safe Boating Week and National Beach Safety Week. David Parker, safety officer for the local US Power Squadron, demonstrated a self‑inflating life jacket and urged residents to wear life jackets and practice checking and rearming devices at home. The council also adopted a National Police Week proclamation to honor fallen officers and recognized local municipal clerks and beautification award winners, including Camino Real Mexican Restaurant and a home at 109 Cutlass Drive.
Town Manager Kyle Brewer reported that the Banks Channel dredging project is complete and that about 525,000 cubic yards of material were placed on the beach. He said the town is managing grant reimbursements and monitoring damage claims tied to a barge incident in Topsail Beach. Brewer also announced two staff hires — Jeremy Smith as planning director and Frank Sidoti as parks, recreation and tourism director — and reminded residents of a budget public hearing set for June 3. He highlighted National Hurricane Preparedness Week and invited residents to the town’s hurricane-preparedness workshop on May 30 from 5–7 p.m. in council chambers.
The ceremonial items provided opportunities for public education on beach and boating safety, and the manager’s report focused on completed dredging work, capital projects and community readiness for the storm season.
