Surf City council approves budget amendment to fund beach vitex eradication

Town Manager Kyle Brewer told the council the Surf City portion of the project comes to about $117,000 and that roughly half of that amount will be covered by grant resources administered through Topsail Beach. “We were successful in obtaining grant resources for this that will cover half the cost,” Brewer said, and asked the council to budget the remainder from the town’s beach nourishment fund.
Council member Trudy Salom moved to approve the amendment; John Koloski seconded the motion. The council approved the measure by voice vote; the meeting record does not show a roll-call tally.
Brewer said Topsail Beach will handle contract administration as the grant administrator and that town staff would notify vendors of the contract award. He also urged any oceanfront property owners who have not signed a property‑owner agreement to do so; he said participation in the eradication effort is free to qualifying property owners.
The vote authorizes staff to proceed with contract execution and to draw the town’s local match from the beach nourishment fund. The council did not record individual roll-call votes in the minutes; the motion carried by unanimous voice vote as recorded at the meeting.
