Chatsworth council approves equipment purchases, appoints planning commissioner and schedules June 22 special meeting

Mayor K.W. Gong called the City of Chatsworth council to order at about 6:00 P.M. on June 1. The council approved the meeting agenda and the May 4, 2026 minutes, and then voted to add a special called meeting for June 22 at 6:00 P.M. to appoint a Mayor Pro Tem.
The council approved multiple purchases and appointments during a roughly 12-minute session. Alderman Fred Welch moved to approve the agenda and minutes; Alderman Terry Crump seconded. The vote on that motion, and on most subsequent motions recorded in the minutes, was 3 to 0.
Key approvals included: appropriating SPLOST funds to buy a new SCBA compressor system (Pivot Air, $38,794.00) and breathing-air equipment for the ladder truck ($2,333.92); a $9,462.00 second-phase purchase and implementation of First Due modules to replace expiring fire-department software; a CrowdStrike firewall-support upgrade via eBrylt for $4,595.96; purchasing a 2026 F350 crew cab for Public Works at about $71,590.40 from Chatsworth Ford using TSPLOST funds; and authorization to spend about $15,000 from SPLOST funds for a police K9, kennel and supplies. The council also approved buying warning-device equipment for a 2026 Ford F150 for about $8,572.72 and a Frigidaire "30 in 20 cubic" refrigerator from Amazon for approximately $769.12 paid from a 2025 GMA Health & Wellness Grant (the refrigerator description is reported in the minutes as written). All of these motions that included vote lines were recorded as passing 3 to 0.
The council reviewed bids for 50 metal LED snowflake decorations to replace units damaged in a fire at Keep Chatsworth/Murray Beautiful. Bids ranged from $21,500 to $28,000 (one bid listed $500 shipping; another bid listed shipping included). Alderman Chris Hardin moved to approve the purchase with the final decision to be made based on shipping cost; the minutes do not record who seconded that motion or record a vote on it.
In personnel actions, the council appointed Ray Cochran to the Planning Commission for a two-year term (June 2026–June 2028). The council also approved participation in antitrust litigation intended to recover alleged overcharges for fire apparatus and equipment.
The meeting closed after the council recessed and reopened to add the June 22 special meeting; the regular session adjourned at about 6:12 P.M. The special called meeting scheduled for June 22 will address the appointment of a Mayor Pro Tem.
