Cedartown manager reports March TAD referendum target, bridge closure, library progress, sirens grant and K-9 recovery

City Manager Edward Guzman delivered a multi-part manager's report outlining near-term projects, grant awards and departmental updates.
Guzman said state legislators are working with city staff on Tax Allocation District legislation; if the bill clears the legislature in time, the city projects a referendum on March 18, but the county elections office set a deadline at the end of the month for inclusion. If the deadline is missed, Guzman said the city would pursue a summer referendum instead.
He announced a 90-day closure that will begin the next day for the North Main Street bridge replacement project and said contractors expect to complete the Cedartown Library renovation by the end of February, after which staff will coordinate a grand re-opening.
Guzman reported Polk County authorized $10,000 to assist with purchasing weather sirens and said the Georgia Emergency Management Agency awarded the city $109,000 for four sirens; the next step is to solicit vendor pricing for installation within the available budget.
Guzman also relayed Chief Newsomes report that Officer Garner and K-9 Luke assisted Polk County PD on Dec. 30, locating an 83-year-old man with dementia; the K-9 tracked a scent that led to the rescue. Guzman said the K-9 was funded by the school zone camera fund.
