Mendota Heights considers DNR grant for Valley Park upgrades, including potential pickleball courts

Parks & Recreation Director and Assistant Public Works Director Meredith Lawrence told the Mendota Heights City Council on Jan. 20, 2026, that she needs direction on pursuing a matching grant from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for improvements at Valley Park.
Lawrence said the grant application would need significant recreational improvements to be competitive and noted that the park playground is 19 years old. She identified the picnic shelter as needing replacement this summer and said replacing it could be done without grant funds if necessary.
Public Works Director Ryan Ruzek suggested expanding the project scope to improve the grant application, mentioning “adding baseball fencing, reimagining the tennis courts as three pickleball courts, possibly covered for year-round use, and potentially adding a salt storage shed.” The council discussed the Parks & Recreation Commission’s budget request to refurbish the picnic shelter and playground for 2026.
Councilor Maczko said he would like more time to consider the requests and Mayor Stephanie B. Levine suggested the Parks & Recreation Commission develop a concept plan with associated costs. Lawrence emphasized the time constraint for submitting the grant application.
Before the session ended, Councilor Lorberbaum made a motion to adjourn; Councilor Mazzitello seconded and the motion carried. The work session adjourned at 5:53 p.m.
