The Portland Board of Education approved a procedural operating budget adjustment that reduces the proposed budget by $50,000, shifting the total from $27,218,420 (4.99%) to $27,168,420 (4.8%) by applying the placeholder savings to certified salaries.
Administrators said the change is a placeholder to finalize numbers for the Board of Selectmen and to allow staff to submit required budget documents. District leadership framed the cut as one of several short‑term savings steps tied to retirements and current vacancies; they said the hiring committee will be reminded to consider lower salary steps when filling certain positions.
Separately, with the bonding referendum passed, the board discussed next steps: forming screening and interview committees for an interim one‑year principal at Valley View, coordinating grant application timelines (staff aim to submit grant materials well before the June 30 deadline), and scheduling packing and professional learning days to support consolidation and moving operations. Administrators proposed shifting some professional learning days to late June and compressing early‑August orientations to create time for packing and room setups while flagging the need to protect required training time.
Board members raised equity concerns about changing calendar days (for example, who keeps pre‑booked vacations if days move) and requested that staff bring a detailed PD schedule before the next meeting so members can weigh options.
The motion to approve the budget adjustment was moved, seconded and passed without recorded opposition.
What happens next: district staff will transmit the adjusted figures to the Board of Selectmen and present a draft PD/calendar plan at the next board meeting to address packing and staffing for the Valley View relocation.
