Cedartown wins $500,000 LWCF grant for Bert Wood Park; library and corner projects remain on schedule

City Manager Edward Guzman reported to the Cedartown City Commission that the city has cleared the design phase for a $500,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant to support improvements at Bert Wood Park.
According to the manager's report, planned work under the grant includes replacing outdated field lighting for the softball fields, renovating the currently closed restroom/concession building, resurfacing two basketball courts, and constructing several volleyball courts. The city described the award as supporting the replacement and renovation work in the park.
Guzman also briefed the Commission on upcoming community events: a Boo Bash at Bert Wood Park (this Saturday, 4–7 p.m.), the DCA Downtown Trick-or-Treat on Halloween with a 5:30 p.m. costume contest, and the Fall Festival on Saturday, Nov. 2, which will feature more than 60 vendors, a Shriners Parade, a dog show, and live music at Holloway Park. The city will host the regional Georgia Recreation and Parks Association district soccer tournament beginning Nov. 16 at Goodyear Park.
Project updates included that library contractors are framing the interior and Lankford Corner contracts are finishing plumbing; both projects remain on schedule for completion in Q1 2025. As part of a Trees Across Georgia grant, staff is planning a tree giveaway of approximately 100 three-gallon trees in coordination with Georgia Forestry staff and the Tree Commission.
The report focused on project timelines and community programming; the Commission did not take separate votes on these informational items during the meeting.
