Candler County accepts $19,897 reimbursement grant, authorizes courthouse repairs RFP and sets 2026 qualifying fees

At its Jan. 20 meeting the Candler County Board of Commissioners approved several administrative and financial items.
The board accepted a reimbursement grant from the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (GACJCC) of up to $19,897 for equipment purchases for the Sheriff’s Office; EMA Director Justin Wells presented the grant opportunity and Administrator Bryan Aasheim requested a separate line item for disbursing and receiving the funds. Chairman Brad Jones moved to accept and proceed with the grant; Commissioner Tre' Ross seconded and the motion carried 5-0.
With the courthouse roof repaired, staff requested authorization to issue a Request for Proposals for storm-related interior repairs to be funded by insurance and FEMA; the board authorized staff to issue the RFP on a unanimous vote.
The commissioners also adopted a resolution setting the qualifying fees for the 2026 election: $144 for County Commissioner candidates in Districts 2 and 4 and $180 for Board of Education candidates in Districts 2 and 4 (Exhibit D). Vice-Chairman Hendrix moved to approve the resolution; Commissioner Ross seconded and the motion carried 5-0.
Finally, the board approved the proposed FY2027 budget schedule, with public hearings to begin in May at 5:00 p.m. The schedule was approved 5-0; the clerk is responsible for publication and subsequent hearing notices.
