The Knox County Board of Education on July 9 approved a resolution asking the Knox County Commission to rescind its 6% pay increase and to transfer an amount equivalent to that raise back to Knox County Schools.
Board member Mr. Triplett, who moved the resolution, said the request was intended as a symbolic and practical response to the district’s recent budget reduction and staff impacts. "I feel like the politicians should not be getting a raise when we're asking staff to take a cut," he said while introducing the resolution, which asks the commission to consider returning the equivalent funds to the district.
Supporters said the measure is a request, not a binding order: if the commission chooses to take it up, the mechanics and tax/pretax treatment would be determined at the county level. Miss Henderson, who seconded the motion, said the board’s action was about partnership and accountability after a last‑minute reduction in county funding.
The board approved the resolution and directed staff to send it to the county commission. Administration and board members asked that any funds returned be directed to line items that meaningfully support staff affected by the budget revision.
What’s next: The resolution will be sent to the Knox County Commission for consideration; any action by the commission would be separate and discretionary.
