Board approves three special events and ratifies sailing camp instructor contracts

At its July meeting the Ocean Parks and Recreation Board approved three special-event permit requests and ratified signed service agreements for sailing camp instructors.
Kimberly, a parks staff member, presented the first request from the Lippert Women's Network for a free, educational event focused on cancer support and nutrition at Fiddler Pine Park. Kimberly told the board the event would use the pavilion and the trail on Sept. 17 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and that organizers were aware of limited parking and encouraging carpooling. A board member moved to approve the Lippert request and the motion passed unanimously.
Kimberly then reviewed a packet application from the National Immigrant Justice Center listing an Oct. 10 date for a 5K run/walk on the trail (the packet notes a $300 permit fee and two additional portable toilets). When a board member raised a concern about a potential scheduling conflict, Kimberly said the other applicant had changed their date to November to avoid overlap. The board voted to approve the National Immigrant Justice Center event as it was presented in the packet.
The board also approved a request for the Outrun Hunger fall festival 5K, scheduled for Nov. 10, starting at Shanklin Park, following Parsons Loop and returning; staff indicated no fees were associated with that permit. The motion to approve was adopted unanimously.
On contracts, Kimberly presented signed service agreements for sailing camp instructors Mia Kai, Lynn Wellington, Iris Eberly and Lauren Abshaw and asked the board to ratify and execute them. A board member asked why one instructor’s hourly rate was higher; Kimberly explained that Mia Kai is a certified instructor who serves as the senior instructor and therefore receives a higher rate. The board voted to ratify the sailing camp service agreements by voice vote.
Board members and participants praised the sailing camp’s organization and noted a waiting list of five or six children, prompting discussion of adding additional sessions next year if instructor availability allows.
All three event approvals and the contract ratifications were adopted by unanimous voice vote. No formal roll-call tallies were recorded in the transcript.
