Superintendent cites 80% AP pass rate, introduces new CHRO and the 'Signs of Success' program

Superintendent Dr. Stephen Cook used the July 7 board meeting to highlight academic achievements and personnel updates for the Bend‑LaPine Administrative SD 1 district.
Cook said the district administered 2,841 Advanced Placement exams across seven high schools this year and that 2,260 of those exams were passed, an 80% pass rate. About 17% of participating students achieved a perfect score on their exams. By content area, the highest pass rate was 100% and the lowest was 29%. "That is a pass rate of 80 percent, which is phenomenal," Cook said, framing the results as cause for celebration and continued improvement.
Cook also described a program called 'Signs of Success,' which recognizes students who achieve biliteracy or multility, complete career and technical education pathways, or earn perfect AP/IB exam scores. He said the district expects more than 700 students will qualify for yard signs this year and invited board members to help distribute them.
On personnel, Cook introduced Tony Sanchez as the district's new chief human resources officer; Sanchez briefly addressed the board, saying he is honored to serve the Bend‑LaPine community.
Cook closed his report by noting he will take a short FMLA leave for his wife's upcoming surgery and said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Lisa Burke will lead while he is out.
The board offered public appreciation for the staff and students who contributed to the AP results during director comments that followed.
