The Economic & Community Development Committee on July 6 voted unanimously to forward to the full council grant-acceptance items necessary to obligate funding for Phase 2a of the Wall Street Corridor Improvement Project.
Nel, a TMP staff member, told the committee TMP has finalized design submissions to the Connecticut Department of Transportation and is awaiting DOT review. Nel said the city was awarded a $5,500,000 federal earmark secured by Congressman Jim Himes and additional UAG funding associated with Senator Bob Duff; she said staff must execute DOT and Federal Highway Administration documents and obligate the funds by Sept. 30 to avoid losing the earmark.
TMP staff described the limits of the Phase 2a work (Main Street up to Hoyt Street, Bridal Boulevard excluding the bridge, and improvements at the Belden Avenue intersection) and highlighted streetscape elements including raised crosswalks and intersections, street trees, and pedestrian amenities that will continue earlier phase work.
Council members praised TMP’s grant strategy and neighborhood engagement and agreed the committee should send the items to the full council so staff can finalize agreements and obligate the funding.
