The Business Economic Development Committee received updates on two economic development initiatives intended to strengthen local business retention and connect Bangor with regional research institutions.
Anne Creed, community economic director, outlined a collaboration with the Root Institute (working through EMDC and connected with Northeastern University) to establish a local presence for entrepreneurship training and support in Bangor. "It's more about retention of an existing business that wants to expand and to grow and to succeed," Creed said, describing outreach that seeks businesses ready to participate and noting the program typically spends six to nine months preparing participants before a cohort starts.
Creed also said the University of Maine has contacted staff about joining a collaboration to establish an AI hub in Bangor, which she described as a way to deepen ties with Orono and bring expertise to local businesses. Councilor Brad asked how local businesses would connect to the program; Creed said staff and the partner organizations do proactive outreach and can add local businesses to a list for engagement.
Councilor Fish and others voiced support for the partnerships and for using the initiatives to create pipelines for local students. No motion or vote was required on these updates at this meeting.
