Richmond Hill council postpones decision on withdrawing support for proposed airport

Mayor Kristi Cox and the City of Richmond Hill Mayor and Council discussed a proposed resolution, requested by Councilmember Cindy Hatala, to withdraw the city's financial and administrative support for a proposed regional airport.
Councilmembers raised procedural and strategic concerns during the workshop, including that the Georgia Department of Transportation's regional study (due by the end of September) is regional rather than site-specific and could point GDOT toward a location outside Bryan County. One councilmember said a recent webinar suggested that GDOT did not have Bryan County "on the radar." Members also discussed whether the legally effective way to stop the project would be to vote "no" on any conditional-use application that comes before the council, rather than adopting a preemptive withdrawal resolution.
The council agreed to postpone further discussion of the resolution until the March workshop so staff can obtain legal counsel from Ray Smith about potential financial risks and legal ramifications. No formal vote on the withdrawal resolution was recorded at the workshop. The council adjourned at 6:38 p.m.
