Sharon selectmen to call town meeting to fill Region 1 education board vacancy; approve agenda and interviews

The explanation came near the center of a brief Sharon Board of Selectmen meeting on May 12 at Town Hall in which the board also approved routine items and heard community announcements. The vacancy procedure matters because it requires a town-level nomination and vote rather than an internal appointment if the region's bylaws do not provide an alternative, First Selectman Casey Flanagan said; an alternate will serve on Region 1 in the interim. Town officials asked residents interested in serving to contact town hall.
Selectman Brett moved to adopt the meeting agenda with the addition of Line Item 5a, concerning the Region 1 representative vacancy; Selectman Kearcher seconded and the motion passed "with all in favor." The board later approved the minutes of April 28, 2026, on a motion by Brett and seconded by Kearcher. The meeting closed after a motion to adjourn that carried "with all in favor."
On personnel, Flanagan said applications have been received for three municipal positions — Fire Marshal, Building Official and Land Use Administrator — and he will schedule interviews with selected candidates. Flanagan also said he will mail requests for fuel bids as part of routine procurement.
Pastor Miller announced a community "Kids Club" that will begin Thursday, June 25, running weekly through the summer from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church. Selectman Brett said planning continues for a fall Art Walk, and Selectman Kearcher invited the public to a spring concert at Sharon Center School on May 27 at 5:30 p.m.
First Selectman Flanagan said next steps on the Region 1 vacancy include confirming the regional bylaws with the Region 1 board clerk and setting a town meeting date if the statute applies; no town meeting date was set at the May 12 session.
