Rangeley schedules mandatory shoreland erosion-and-sediment-control certification; class set for Oct. 15

Town staff told the Rangeley Plan Implementation Committee on June 22 that a full-state erosion-and-sediment-control certification class will be offered in Rangeley on Thursday, Oct. 15, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., to help contractors and residents meet shoreland excavation requirements.
The staff member said only two people currently maintain the certification in town and that the town will ask contractors who excavate in shoreland areas to file proof of certification with the town. "So the only two people certified right now in Rangeley is Mike Seminara and Mike Ferguson," the staff member said. "We're gonna have to get everybody in here and get pre-certified again."
Committee members discussed logistics, enrollment fees and enforcement. The staff member said the class cost is $25 per person and will include materials and binders; members proposed helping with lunch, offering multiple sessions, and creating sign-in/out procedures to ensure attendees complete the full-day class.
Members agreed to publicize the training on the town website and to notify permit applicants that certification will be required for shoreland work next year. A committee member said the committee will give advance notice so contractors can take training during the fall and winter before stricter enforcement in the spring.
No penalty changes were adopted at the meeting; members directed staff to share registration details and to develop an outreach plan ahead of enforcement changes.
