Committee endorses plan to pilot park activities, directs staff to begin outreach

A committee voted to endorse a staff proposal to spend limited staff time and resources to select and pilot several programming ideas at the park and test them with resident groups.

The endorsement follows staff recommendations to pick a few promising activities, run trials with residents and neighborhood groups, and promote events through the city gazette and the municipality’s social channels. Lee said the idea is for local stakeholders or a passionate resident to oversee individual activities, with city staff providing coordination and publicity unless a special-event permit is required.

“We can submit anything we want. It’s just what’s the likelihood of it getting approved?” Lee said, describing prior conversations with the area engineer and permitting constraints. Committee members discussed timing: one participant said May, while another said mid-April if the staff intends an end-of-April opening.

Members also noted short-term construction at the site — a cabin is being assembled and should not be unusually noisy, but an upcoming all-inclusive playground could affect nighttime programming plans. Staff emphasized the pilot approach would let the city test demand and operational impacts before committing larger resources.

Chair asked for a motion to endorse the concept; the motion was made and seconded. After a vocal assent, the chair declared the motion carried. A participant observed logistical items such as stored logs now being on site and joked about temporary pickets; the committee otherwise gave direction for staff to move forward with outreach and initial planning.

Next steps: staff will inventory nearby parcels and right-of-way for event siting, coordinate with neighborhood groups for pilot scheduling, and return to the committee with any permit requirements or cost estimates that exceed normal outreach efforts.
