Citizen input and a staff follow-up led the Early City Council to set a purchase limit and direct follow-up for repairs at the city's Shelter House.
Lexi Bainbridge reported on cleaning at the Shelter House and documented damage and mold to an existing cabinet. Bainbridge presented a basic replacement quote from Menards and said she would check with K. Horan at VT Industries to see whether reduced-price options were available.
Councilors questioned whether portable A/C units were the best value. After discussion, Councilor Brian Pickhinke moved (seconded by Councilor Becky Blackman) that staff locate a wall-mounted A/C unit priced under $500 and pursue the best deal for a replacement cabinet, with assistance from the Department of Public Works. The motion passed on a unanimous show of hands.
Separately, the council approved a motion to raise the Shelter House rental fee to $50 while keeping the deposit at $50 (moved by Councilor Bill Cougill). That motion also passed unanimously.
The council did not authorize a specific cabinet purchase at the meeting; staff were directed to seek price-reduced options and return with recommendations if necessary. No changes to deposit policy were made beyond the rental-fee increase.
