Township approves $8,900 HRG proposal to pursue Growing Greener grant for Asylum Run streambank work

Susquehanna Township on May 28 approved payment not to exceed $8,900 to HRG to prepare a grant application to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Growing Greener program for streambank restoration along Asylum Run.
Director of Parks and Recreation Doug Knauss told the board that the work would fund planning and construction design for streambank restoration of Asylum Run from Andrea Avenue to State Farm Road, an area that runs adjacent to the Veterans Park Trail and is showing erosion that threatens the trail’s stability. Knauss said the DEP program permits requests up to $500,000 and requires a 5% local match. The board amended the motion to include a cost breakdown: Phase I $4,800 and Phase II $4,100 for a combined not-to-exceed amount of $8,900.
Commissioner Fred Faylona moved to approve the HRG proposal and Commissioner Sean Sanderson seconded. The motion carried unanimously. Knauss said staff will meet with DEP and reassess the final application to ensure the Township submits a strong proposal. The board confirmed grant funds must be used for Asylum Run work and cannot be shifted to other locations.
