Val Verde County signs off on ambulance funding, cancer center support and authorizes federal drug court grant application

On a healthcare item, the Chair described a funding package that included a reported $350,000 grant for an ambulance for the hospital and county allocations discussed in the meeting (the Chair referenced an allocation of about $150,000), saying the combined support brings the county’s contribution and grant funding to “right at a half $1,000,000.” The court moved and approved the item; the motion carried 4-0.
Separately, Judge (presenter) described a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) published June 16 for an expansion grant that would run five years and provide $400,000 per year. The judge said the grant would expand treatment-court services and clarified that it is an expansion (not a replacement) of existing governor’s funding and would not be used to supplement existing salaries; the grant requires a program director position that could be fully funded by the NOFO if named in the application. “This grant … is 400,000 a year… it’s an expansion grant,” the presenter said.
A commissioner who visited the drug treatment court described participant progress and rehabilitation benefits, noting the program’s counseling, monitoring and structured supports. The court authorized staff to apply for the NOFO and to proceed with grant submission preparations. The authorizations and approvals for the ambulance and the grant application passed unanimously (4-0).
Staff said that if the NOFO is awarded they will return with a full budget and program details for commissioners to review before any spending commitments are finalized.
