Sheriff and public-safety staff report steady patrol activity, dispatch upgrades and jail metrics

The sheriff told the Public Safety Committee that two support-staff positions—the front receptionist and sheriff secretary—were recently filled and are in training, and that the office is assisting the Lac Courte Oreilles (LCO) police department on a death investigation that was initially reported to dispatch as a gunshot incident.
"Dispatch received a call of some injuries from a gunshot... indications are it's a homicide," the sheriff said, adding that LCO has taken the lead on the case and the sheriff's office is assisting.
The lieutenant reported patrol volume has been steady over the past three months, provided monthly call-for-service totals and said deputies issued traffic citations and warnings; he also described department support for community events including MuskyFest and upcoming National Night Out.
The jail administrator reported an average daily population of 59 (15 female, 44 male) and a total population of 60 at the time of the report; averages cited included 35 for probation incarceration, 18 for pre-sentence incarceration and 6 for sentenced incarceration. The jail reported one person on electronic monitoring and said the unemployment rate at booking was 68%.
Nicole Rubsinski, EMCOM/communications director, said two part-time dispatchers were hired and are progressing in training, radio console upgrades purchased with a 2024 grant will be installed soon, June calls-for-service numbered 1,681 and year-to-date calls total about 8,053. She said a trial of Baron Threat Net for weather data had mixed results and that Pano360 wildfire cameras are being used to deliver real-time notifications.
Committee members asked questions and thanked staff for the reports; no formal actions were taken on these routine monthly updates.
