Elmwood Park council tables proposed 10% water-rate increase for review

The Elmwood Park mayor and council on Jan. 22 introduced an ordinance (26-01) that would amend borough water rates following a water-company notice of a 10% increase. After discussion, Councilman Bruce Fasolo moved to table the ordinance to allow time for research into how other municipalities are handling the increase and whether the governor’s recent declaration of a utility emergency affects the company’s ability to pass the charge to the borough.
Mr. Foligno (town staff) told the council the water company implemented a 10% rate increase this year and that staff would confirm when that increase went into effect. Councilman Sampson asked whether the borough was already paying the higher rates; staff said they would verify and report back.
The motion to table was seconded and passed on roll call. The council’s action means the ordinance’s final hearing is deferred and staff will investigate the legal and billing implications before the council takes further action.
