Monmouth Beach finds 1976 time capsule; historic commission to open it May 9

The chair told attendees the capsule had been underground in a wet area for about 50 years and the borough recovered it earlier than planned to avoid an extended excavation with no results. "We did find it and it appears to be in good shape," the chair said. The historic commission plans to lay out the contents in Borough Hall and exhibit them as part of the borough's June 14 250th-anniversary events.
The announcement came during the public-comment portion of the April meeting and followed brief procedural business and department reports. The chair asked residents to spread the word about the May 9 opening so the community can view the contents once conservators and the historic commission examine them.
The meeting record shows no formal vote was required to accept custody of the capsule; borough staff said the item is secured in the borough garage pending the May 9 public opening.
