Board conducts first reading of preschool, elementary and activities handbooks; members request clarifications

The Pipestone Area School District board held a first reading of the Little Arrows Preschool Handbook, Elementary Handbook and Activities Handbook and asked staff to clean up wording and address several operational concerns.
Board members asked that the activities section's attendance requirement (students must be in school at the start of first hour and present in class for the remainder of the day to participate) be clarified to account for PSEO, ALC and home‑schooled students who participate in activities. Members suggested rewording for clarity rather than a strict prohibition.
On the elementary handbook, board members raised questions about withholding final report cards for overdue or lost library books and asked whether that practice aligns with policy; staff noted report cards are still distributed (often electronically) and said language will be adjusted. Members also recommended specifying rabies vaccination for animals brought into classrooms and requiring proof (a vaccination certificate).
In the activities handbook, members recommended removing language that preferred a senior teammate for state tournaments and instead allow the athlete to choose a teammate to enhance fairness for younger qualifiers. Several typographical and spacing edits were also requested. The items were presented as a first reading and may be revised before a future vote.
