Camanche council appoints Amy Magers to fill vacant seat

The Camanche City Council voted July 7 to appoint Amy Magers to fill a vacant council seat until the next municipal election.

Mayor (voice 3) opened the candidate interviews and asked each applicant to describe their background and priorities. Magers, who said she moved to Camanche four years ago and has four grandchildren in local schools, told council she wants to help grow the city, expand events for families and support parks and recreation. "I'd like to build it, make it a place stronger for more people to come and live here with us," Magers said.

Dominic Sutcliffe, the other finalist, emphasized fiscal responsibility, parks maintenance and sewage infrastructure as his top priorities. He told council he wants to help retain young families and cited his experience working in the medical field as part of his reasoning.

After brief discussion, a council member nominated Magers; another council member seconded the nomination and the motion passed on roll call. Council adopted a resolution appointing Magers to serve until the next city election and set a public hearing on the appointment for July 21, 2026, at Comanche City Hall.

Council members praised both applicants. "Both did a fantastic job," one council member said during deliberations, while the mayor encouraged the unsuccessful candidate to remain engaged through other boards or future elections.

The appointment is effective upon completion of any required administrative steps; the council will hold a public hearing on July 21 to accept public comment and to finalize the process.
