Griffith council approves $2.52 million in claims, fireworks permit and police vehicle purchase

Council approved the June 16 and July 1 minutes after motions and seconds and then approved claims presented to the council. "The motion carries," Council President Rick Raefa said after each vote.
The council granted permission for the Salvatorian fathers' Marian pilgrimage to pass through Griffith on August 9, the council approved a fireworks display permit for the Saint Mary's Western Day Festival scheduled for Aug. 9, and it authorized the Griffith Police Department to purchase a 2026 Ford Police Interceptor. A council speaker said the police department has funds from various departmental sources to cover the vehicle and that no general fund appropriation would be used for the purchase.
Council members also used the meeting to acknowledge public works staff for storm cleanup efforts. "Great job for all the public works guys," Raefa said during remarks recognizing crews who worked through heat and overnight hours.
No formal roll-call tallies were entered in the transcript; votes were recorded by voice and the chair announced motions carried. The council scheduled its next regular meeting for Tuesday, July 21 at 7 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. study session and a water board meeting to follow.
