Commissioner Marty Corley told the Michigan City Human Rights Commission on July 7 that school officials will hold four public meetings to explain an upcoming operating referendum and urged the community to attend for transparency and questions.
"Those will be Thursday, July 23 at Michigan City High School, Tuesday, August 18 at Lake Hills Elementary, Thursday, September 24 at Edgewood Elementary, and Thursday, October 22 at Krueger Middle School," Corley said, adding that the meetings will start at 6 p.m. He described the meetings as opportunities for residents to learn how state school funding works, how property tax caps and circuit breakers have reduced local revenue over time, and what is at risk if the referendum fails.
Corley also announced a back-to-school rally on Aug. 8 at Gilfield from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Commissioners discussed staffing a commission table and distributing materials; they noted budget limits and suggested low-cost giveaways such as pencils or folders.
Corley referenced a post by school board member Mike Gresham outlining funding history and said many districts statewide are seeking referendums in the coming years. The commission provided no fiscal estimate of referendum revenue or the specific referendum language during the meeting.
