Planning commission recommends county accept Montgomery Bell Estates roads for maintenance

A late agenda item on July 9 prompted the Dixon County Planning Commission to recommend that the Dixon County Commission accept several roads in the Montgomery Bell Estates subdivision for county maintenance.

County staff reported that parts of the subdivision’s roads were dedicated when the subdivision was created but that some segments were never formally dedicated to the county. An inspection found most roads in decent shape, although one road showed age and would require more work if acceptance were delayed.

“Part of it is actually a county road … the remainder of it never got dedicated,” a county staff member said, explaining the bond was let go and the final steps to dedicate the remainder never occurred.

Commission counsel and staff said formal acceptance now would clean up a decades‑old gap in maintenance responsibility. The commission moved and seconded a recommendation that the Dixon County Commission accept the roads for maintenance by the Dixon County Highway Department. The motion passed on a voice vote.

The commission clarified that it is making a recommendation to the county commission; the county commission must take the final action to accept the roads and place them on the county‑maintenance schedule.
