City planning staff gave a detailed update on Wildwood's planned Route 66 centennial celebration, describing a three‑day program of events intended to draw residents and visitors.
Highlights include a Route 66‑themed concert at the Village Green (Friday evening), a Saturday cruise with five activity nodes connected by trolley (Historic Grover, Old Pond School, Big Chief Roadhouse, Wildwood Middle School area and Stovall's Grove), and a Sunday marker unveiling with a presentation by Joe Sonderman. Staff said they are coordinating car staging, trolley service, history tents, museum tours and family activities.
Staff also described promotional materials (Route 66 coloring postcards targeted to young people), a photo‑op idea and a proposal for themed "photo‑op cakes" produced by a local business as a lower‑cost alternative to fabricated structures. The department said it has approximately $10,000 allocated for Route 66 efforts this year and asked commissioners for help recruiting volunteers and outreach to local businesses.
Logistics and concerns: Commissioners asked about traffic, farmers market coordination, and inclusion of nearby businesses off the corridor; staff said they anticipate only a short window of managed traffic impacts during the cruise and will coordinate logistics and volunteer assignments.
