Water main break at Brook Flats isolates DPW garage; valves and engineer review planned

Mayor George P. Hutnick informed residents and councilmembers during public session on July 22 that an overnight water-main break on Brook Flats likely under the riverbed by the bridge shut off service to the DPW garage. He said turning off that line limited the outage to the DPW garage and that a contractor will need to install valves on each side of the broken pipe so water can be restored to the DPW while a larger repair is planned.
The mayor said engineers will evaluate the main break and consider whether vibrations from the bridge over time could have contributed to the failure. In the interim, he advised getting a company to install temporary isolation valves because the DPW cannot operate a garage without water.
Council directed staff to coordinate with the CFO and the engineer to schedule the work and report back. No timeline for full repair or cost estimates were provided at the meeting.
