Kanan Burko, a life scout with Troop 246 of Grand Haven, asked the KLH Dunes Preserve Board on March 17 for project ideas to fulfill his Eagle Scout requirements.
"I turned 18 in December, so I need to get started on my Eagle Scout project," Kanan said, and listed possible tasks such as installing boot scrapers, trail signs, benches, invasive species removal and stair maintenance.
Board members responded positively. "We've had Boy Scout projects before, Eagle Scout projects before," the chair said, and members encouraged an on-site hike to scope work. One board member recommended including an educational component to any installation.
The student and board agreed to exchange contact information and to coordinate a site visit this spring once weather and snowmelt permit. Kanan said May or June would be ideal timing; the board said it could provide limited material or matching support depending on fundraising needs.
The board asked Kanan to provide contact details and confirmed a member would coordinate the initial outreach so the scout could begin planning.
