Cindy Perry, president of the town election board, presented the committee's redistricting work at the Town of Princess Anne's Oct. 20 work session and recommended a map the board says meets the town's 5% variance requirement.
Perry told commissioners the committee began in June and combined county voter counts by street with Census block maps and a regional census contact to reconcile populations. "We tried every other scenario we could think of…this was the only scenario that would give us under 5% or less," Perry said, adding that an independent 2022 GIS study produced a matching result. Commissioners asked questions about eliminating district-based seats in favor of at-large seats; the presiding officer cautioned that at-large elections could reduce minority representation in the town and urged retaining district seats for now.
Perry said county deadlines had shifted and that maps need to be finalized to permit candidate filings; commissioners agreed to resume the item at the Nov. 3 legislative meeting so the newly appointed commissioner and other members could review materials before a final vote.
