Administrators and board members spent a significant portion of the workshop reviewing facility needs and options for sequencing repairs to avoid exhausting reserves after recent elementary work.
Dr. Ryder and board members listed priority repairs: portions of the middle‑school roof that are leaking (particularly near heating coils), replacement of aging boilers (the district has been operating on a single boiler in some periods), fire‑panel upgrades and other maintenance needs. The presenter noted that capital work at the elementary school (including air conditioning) used reserve funds and that the district currently has about $1.2 million in its capital reserve.
Board members canvassed options for addressing immediate needs piecemeal — replacing the specific leaking roof section and addressing boilers first — to reduce disruption and budgetary shock. One board member said starting with the most urgent sections would allow the district to spread costs over multiple years rather than deplete reserves at once.
Administrators said they will research prior project files and revisit grant or vendor options to determine whether phased repairs and available grants could mitigate costs. The facilities discussion was framed as part of the larger budget conversation and will continue in the Finance & Facilities committee.
