Crisfield council self‑nominates for Chesapeake Gateways, approves technical assistance application

City staff recommended that Crisfield self‑nominate as a Chesapeake Gateways partner so the city could pursue a nonfinancial technical assistance package for marketing, communications, planning and networking.
Jennifer from the Center for Watershed Protection said the nomination is the first step and explained the assistance would be nonfinancial — City staff and Chesapeake Gateways staff/contractors would help with planning, convening stakeholders and developing a marketing campaign. She noted the Crisfield Heritage Foundation and the Ward Brothers workshop are already Chesapeake Gateway sites, which the staff presentation said strengthens Crisfield's nomination.
Council discussed timing concerns because the technical assistance application is due May 6 while the next meeting was scheduled for April 22; staff said nomination does not bind the city to funded work and that it would enable the city to pursue the assistance and then shape projects with local stakeholders. A motion to self‑nominate was made, seconded and carried. A subsequent motion to apply for the technical assistance was also moved, seconded and approved by roll call 'Aye' votes.
Council members identified potential local partners (Main Street committee, arts organizations and heritage groups) and asked staff to coordinate outreach if the technical assistance award is made.
