DuPage Care Center reports two rhinovirus cases; board approves lifts, contract extensions and budget transfers

Janelle, representing the DuPage Care Center, updated the DuPage County Human Services Committee on facility operations and health on June 16.
"Unfortunately, we have 2 cases of rhinovirus, which is on 4 North. And so we are masking on that unit only," Janelle said, asking the committee to note that rhinovirus has been more symptomatic for some residents than COVID-19 has been in recent years. She also reported progress on a "secret garden" renovation—site work is underway and master gardeners from the University of Illinois are helping set up a temporary garden so residents can continue gardening activities during construction.
On procurement and contracts, the committee recommended approval of a purchase order to EasyWeigh, Inc. to furnish and deliver lifts, stands, scales, batteries, slings and harnesses for the DuPage Care Center for the period July 15–Nov. 30, 2026, for a contract total not to exceed $65,566.47. The committee also approved an amendment extending the White and Company contract for architectural and engineering services for the East Building through Nov. 30, 2026; during discussion Member Sarlin asked why an extension was needed and facilities management staff were not present to answer, so staff said they would follow up with details.
The committee approved an amendment to AdvoCare Systems (wound therapy rental and supplies), increasing the encumbrance by $14,000 to a new contract total of $24,000, and approved a budget transfer of $68,363 from building improvements to equipment and machinery to cover the new EasyWeigh lifts and stands. Staff explained that when purchase orders from the prior year close, associated funds are rolled into new purchase orders for the next program year though not necessarily tied to the same contractor; staff said the funds remain available for program use.
Questions from members included the planter-box materials and accessibility (Janelle said planters are approximately 24–26 inches off the ground, wheelchair-appropriate) and how dining-room service is being phased in during construction (Janelle said a soft opening for lunch three days a week and phased expansion toward dinner service as construction allows; units continue to use smaller dining areas for breakfast).
What happens next: staff will follow up with facilities management to explain the need for the White and Company extension and will report back. The DuPage Care Center will present its budget in a subsequent operations meeting.
